s represented in flight with its wings spread out and it is covered in colorful gems. The eyes pop and the beak looks like a hook! The image of this eagle was very popular in Western art. It's meaning has evolved over the years from an ancient sun symbol, to a symbol of Rome. To the Visigoths, who adopted Christianity in 589, this would represent Saint John.
The reading and my blog has mentioned that the eagle was once a symbol of Rome, which i find interesting because now the bald eagle is a symbol of America and all of it's freedom! It was accepted as our National bird with the Great Seal of the U.S. in 1782. This image also shows an eagle with it's wings spread out as if it were about to take off, just as the Eagle Brooch. Like the visgroths, we wear bald eagle pendents, earrings and even pins! Our meaning of patriotism has nothing to do with their meaning of religion, but they look very similar!

I like the comparison that you make between the images. The image of an Eagle evokes powerful emotions for me and I think most people. It always fascinates to see how a symbol evolves over time.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cool comparison of Rome and America's eagle. Maybe the eagle portrayed something very similar to the Roman's and American's eyes.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the comparison. That is a good idea. I think symbols are very important for both people and country. They can reflect very important messages.
ReplyDeleteGood comparison. I like how you commented no how the eagle was and important symbol and how it still is today... just with a different meaning. Not only is it a symbol of freedom and the U.S., but it also represents a band, the boy scouts of America, and endangered animals.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about it like that. Great find, and great points you have made with the comparasions
ReplyDeleteGood comparison!!!! I really like it, i like how not only the eagle represented the United States but also numerous scouts, bands, and etc.
ReplyDeleteI think it is strange that so many cultures use the Eagle as a signifier of the power and greatness of an empire, or more currently, a nation. Great Comparison!
ReplyDeleteThe bald eagle has an enormous influence on cultures throughout the world. If we look at it like we have been practicing in this class, everyone gives and sees a different meaning in art, in religious figures, in symbols etc.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how the meaning of eagle evolved and changed over time. I did not know that eagle was also symbol of Rome. I guess eagle is very good symbol for any strong country.
